Indiana Starts California Tour With Loss in Berkeley

BERKELEY, California, October 11. THE Indiana Hoosier’s two-day competition tour of the San Francisco Bay area started with a loss to the California Golden Bears today, 173-122, as Cal posted the fastest times in all but one swimming event.

This meet was the opportunity for two potential NCAA finalists in the backstroke events race each other. Cal freshman Ryan Murphy got the better of Indiana senior Eric Ress today, winning the 100 back in 47.58 to Ress’ 48.63 as well as a 1:43.72 to Ress’ 1:45.76 in the 200 distance. Murphy’s 100 back time is just a tenth slower than what he posted a few weeks ago to win the King of the Pool pentathlon, and his 200 back is his fifth-fastest performance ever, but well back of his lifetime best of 1:38.15 from last December’s nationals.

Also posting a double win and showing remarkable consistency was Cal sophomore Tyler Messerschmidt, who won the 50 free with a nation-leading 20.11 and the 100 free with a 44.20. That’s Messerschmidt’s fastest 100 free so far this season, and leads the nation.

Jeremy Bagshaw showed Cal’s versatility with a sweep of the distance events. He started off with a 9:06.60 in the 1000 free to put himself just a couple of seconds behind 1650 NCAA champion Connor Jaeger this season. Bagshaw, who was a consolation finalist in the 500 free at the 2013 NCAAs, won that event today with a 4:24.56.

Indiana’s only outright win of the day in swimming events came in the 100 breast. Tanner Kurz won in a close battle with Cals Josh Prenot, 55.78 to 55.85. Cody Miller, a member of the USA team at the World University Games in this event and an NCAA finalist, was third with a 56.40.

Darian Schmidt gave Indiana crucial points in diving with wins in the 1-meter (359.55 points) and 3-meter (395.70) events.

Though the swims were done as exhibition events, Prenot and Jacob Pebley posted the fastest times in the 200 IM. Prenot won with a 1:49.21 and Pebley posted a 1:51.64. Mike Hurley notched the first-place points for Indiana with a 1:53.21 while Miller was second with a 1:53.30.
