Wheel of Fortune for Stanford Cardinal, UC Santa Cruz Slugs in Unorthodox Contest

STANFORD, California, October 4. THE dual meet contested between Stanford and UC Santa Cruz today proved to be an exciting affair, with events chosen at random with a carnival wheel with nine different events being spun before each race.

Swimmers literally had less than a second to be prepared for what event would come up next, as shown by this Instagram video from the meet.

Overall, 32 different races wrapped up in just less than an hour as the Cardinal and the Slugs decided to get things over with fairly quickly.

“Mission accomplished,” Stanford head coach Ted Knapp said. “This was one great hour of quality swimming, with some people racing their best event, an off event, or an event they haven’t swum since high school. There was the aspect of adversity in not knowing which events were going to be swum. Everyone had to get into — and stay in — that racing mentality. The spirit on the deck was great from heat to heat.”

David Nolan had the best day of all with an impressive four victories on the day. He claims wins in the 50 free (20.52), 100 IM (50.33), 100 fly (49.70) and 50 breast (26.38). Gray Umbach also had a good day for the Cardinal as well with a title trifecta. He won his heats of 100 back (51.15), 100 IM (50.84) and 100 fly (49.780

UC Santa Cruz, an NCAA Division III member, had a tough time even cracking the top three of any race in a valiant swim against the much stronger Cardinal. In fact, Casey Colella (100 breast: 1:01.41), James Lamb (50 back: 28.78) and Brian Walthour (50 breast: 30.89) proved to be the only Slugs to finish third in the hour of swimming.
