ATHENS, Georgia, October 4. GEORGIA swimming and diving welcomed Big Ten foe Wisconsin to Athens for a two-day meet, and weren't exactly demonstrating the best Southern hospitality with a pair of strong outings by both the men and women. The Bulldogs led 130-54 after day one with the Lady Bulldogs ahead 129-55. The competition concludes tomorrow at 10 a.m.
"We were not spectacularly fast, but I thought the kids swam tough," Georgia coach Jack Bauerle said. "We've been putting them through their paces, so I know they're tired. But this will keep toughening them up and will get them ready as we move forward in the schedule."
Chase Kalisz, who recently joined the Team USA Duel in the Pool roster, proved to be dominant with a stunning three victories on day one. He clocked an NCAA B cut in the 200-yard IM with a 1:47.65, and also won the 200 fly (1:48.42) and 200 breast (2:00.64). Kalisz also anchored the winning 800 free relay with a 1:38.09 as Alec Cohen, Jameson Hill and Doug Reynolds joined him for a 6:39.35.
Melanie Margalis and Hali Flickinger had strong nights for the Lady Bulldogs. Margalis clocked an NCAA B cut in the 500 free (4:46.47) and 200 breast (2:13.70), while Flickinger topped the 200 back in an NCAA B cut of 1:58.92 before winning the 200 fly in 2:00.93.
Wisconsin still didn't go down without a fight on day one. Aja Van Hout rocked an NCAA B cut time of 2:02.39 to win the 200-yard IM, while Ivy Martin blitzed the 50-yard free in an NCAA B cut of 22.38. Georgia's Chantal van Landeghem also turned in a B cut with a second-place 22.80.
Wisconsin proved to have a bit stronger of a top-end sprint group as well with Brett Pinfold touching out Georgia's Michael Trice by the slimmest of margins, 20.74 to 20.75, in the men's 50-yard free for the Badgers best male swim. Pinfold doubled up with a 1:38.68 to top the 200-yard free. Notably, Georgia's Tynan Stewart clocked a B cut time of 1:45.96 to win the 200-yard back ahead of Wisconsin's NCAA titlist Drew teDuits (1:46.65).
