California Men Kick Off Season With Dominant Win Over Pacific

BERKELEY, California, October 3. AFTER a campus explosion had the entire UC-Berkeley student base under a bit of duress, the men’s swimming and diving team collected itself quite nicely prior to tonight’s dual meet opener against Pacific.

Head coach Dave Durden’s squad collected a dominant 149-104 victory ahead of Pacific at the Spieker Aquatics Complex.
Senior Jeremy Bagshaw and sophomore Tyler Messerschmidt led the way for the Golden Bears with Messerschmidt definitely taking top billing as the most inspiring swimmer coming back from missing a semester due to academic issues.

Messerschmidt, who went home to Phoenix, Ariz., to get his schooling in order, returned with a vengeance tonight with wins in the 50-yard free (20.16) and 100 free (44.55). He also helped the 200 medley relay to a win as he anchored the team of Sven Campbell, Josh Prenot and Marcin Tarczynski to a 1:31.47.

Bagshaw, meanwhile, picked up a pair of wins of his own to show some senior leadership as he topped the 200-yard free (1:40.01) and 500 free (4:29.89). Cal also had wins from freshman Janardan Burns in the 1000 free (9:38.27), freshman Long Gutierrez in the 200 fly (1:49.51), Tarczynski in the 100 back (48.84) and Prenot in the 200 breast (2:01.76).

Pacific didn’t let the Bears whitewash them, however. Junior Cameron Franke scored a triumph in the 100-yard breast with a 58.00, touching out California’s Ryan Studebaker (58.08) and Hunter Cobleigh (58.19) in a close contest. Franke went out hard in 27.33 and held on for the win.

Freshman Curtis Klein also earned a win for Pacific in the 200-yard back with a 1:50.53 to 1:50.90 win ahead of Jeremie Dezwirek of Cal. Other Pacific wins were due to the Bears exhibitioning once victory was in hand.
