Litherland Triplets Stay Close to Home, Make Verbal Commitment to Georgia Bulldogs

ATLANTA, Georgia, September 25. THE University of Georgia’s men’s team got some good news today that had nothing to do with beating conference rivals Kentucky in dual meet action. The team got three new verbal commitments with one phone call, as the Litherland triplets made the choice to stay in Georgia and represent the Bulldogs next fall.

Jay, Mick and Kevin Litherland represent Dynamo Swim Club and are Olympic Trials qualifiers with massive potential to score for Georgia in the middle distance and distance events under coaches Jack Bauerle and Harvey Humphries. Jay currently has the most impressive credentials of the three, having competed at the junior world championships this summer in the 800 free relay and 400 IM. He placed sixth in the 400 IM in Dubai with a 4:19.64, though his lifetime best is 4:17.58 from this summer’s junior national championships. Jay is a member of the junior national team in the 200 IM (2:02.24) as well as the 400 IM.

Kevin is also a junior national team member, having placed third in the 1500 free at junior nationals with a lifetime best 15:35.07. Mick is on the cusp of national team status after his 2:00.00 in the 200 fly that got him fifth at junior nationals.

In short course yards, all three have some ground to make up to catch their long course performances from this summer. Jay owns a best time of 4:24.31 in the 500 and 3:49.44 in the 400 IM. The 400 IM time is on the cusp on an invitation to the NCAA championships, and would have placed in the top 30 last spring. Kevin, the distance freestyle specialist, has a best time of 4:23.30 in the 500 and 15:20.32 in the 1650, while Mick could contribute most at Georgia in the 200 fly, where he holds a best time of 1:48.74.
