Cincinnati Adds Cincy Native Matt Ense as Assistant Swimming Coach

CINCINNATI, Ohio, August 29. THE University of Cincinnati had welcomed home Cincinnati native Matt Ense as an assistant swimming coach. Ense comes to head coach Month Hopkins’ coaching staff after a year as the head coach at DePauw University in Indiana.

“I would like to thank Coach Hopkins for the opportunity to come back to Cincinnati and join the Bearcat family,” Ense said. “It is an honor to work with such a great staff and athletic department. I’m looking forward to working with Coach Hopkins and the student-athletes to continue building on their successes in and out of the pool.”

Ense, who graduated from Cincinnati’s Oak Hill High School, went on to compete for Eastern Michigan, where he captured five conference titles in the Mid-American Conference before venturing into a coaching career.

A graduate of Cincinnati’s Oak Hill High School, Ense went on to swim at Eastern Michigan, where he was a five-time Mid-American Conference champion and MAC Scholar-Athlete. He also competed at the 2000 US Olympic Trials, where he finished ninth in the 5,000.

Prior to DePauw, Ense has had coaching stints at Denison, and the Race Club with Mike Bottom in Key Largo, Fla. He had a hand in helping 13 Olympians gear up for the 2008 Olympics, including Nathan Adrian before the superstar sprinter went on to be part of a gold medal winning relay in the 400 free relay in Beijing. For a refresher, that’s the one where Jason Lezak became a legend in the sport with his epic anchor to overtake the French.

During his time as an assistant coach at Denison, Ense earned CollegeSwimming.com’s Rising Assistant Coach of the Year in 2012, and was hailed by Denison head coach Gregg Parini as his “best assistant coach in 25 years.”

“Matt is as eager to come back to Cincinnati and be a Bearcat as we are to have him on the team,” Hopkins said. “He’s worked hard to learn as much about the sport from coaches as possible and now he gets the chance to contribute that knowledge to our ‘One Team’ philosophy.”
