GAINESVILLE, Florida, July 10. THE Florida Gators beefed up their distance program today, as Megan Rankin will transfer to Gainesville this fall from the University of California-Los Angeles.

Rankin was unable to improve in the pool in her freshman year at UCLA, failing to post a lifetime best in short course yards or long course meters events in the 2012-2013 season. She was one to watch after impressive swims at the California Interscholastic Federation's Southern Section championships in May 2012, posting a 4:43.94 in the 500-yard freestyle.

Rankin swam the 400 and 800 free, as well as the 200 fly and 400 IM at the Olympic Trials last year, with her highest place being 33rd in the 400 IM with a 4:51.79.

Rankin showed improvement in her mid- to late-teens swimming for Mark Schubert at the Golden West Swim Club. She was second in the 1500 freestyle at the 2012 U.S. Open with a 16:37.10 and was runner-up to Katie Ledecky in the distance freestyles at the 2011 junior nationals.
