WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana, February 10. ON the strength of wins in 13 of 16 events, the seventh-ranked Indiana men's swimming and diving team posted a 179.5-118.5 win at Purdue Saturday afternoon.
With the final dual meet of the season now in the books, the Hoosiers will turn their attention to the 2013 Big Ten Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, Feb. 27-March 2 in Bloomington.
The Hoosiers went 2-3 on the platform with Casey Johnson second (376.88) and Mick Dell'Orco third (369.68). The team of James Wells, Tanner Kurz, Cody Miller and Daniel Kanorr won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:28.98.
Ryan Hinshaw continues to lead IU in the distance events, winning the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 9:21.39. Grayson Smith was fourth in 9:26.70, and Nicholas Schwab fifth (9:26.83).
It was a 1-2-3 sweep for the Hoosiers in the 200 freestyle, with Jim Barbiere leading the way at 1:38.79. Matt Gerth touched the wall second (1:39.28) and Mike Hurley third (1:39.62).
The Hoosiers also took the top two spots in the 100 backstroke as Eric Ress posted a winning time of 48.39, an NCAA B cut. Wells was second at 48.53. The winning streak continued in the 100 breaststroke as Miller clocked a winning time of 55.27 (NCAA B cut) and Kurz took second at 56.21.
It was Steve Schmuhl standing atop the podium in the 200 butterfly, victorious in a time of 1:49.98. Right on his heels was Sam Trahin in second (1:50.62), while Joe Powell was sixth (1:52.67).
Kanorr tied with Purdue's Danny Tucker in the 50 free as both posted an NCAA B cut of 20.05. Jacob Kelzer touched the wall sixth in 21.05. Kanorr also placed third in the 100 freestyle (45.63) with Gerth fourth (46.10) and Barbiere fifth (46.19).
Ress made it a sweep in the backstroke events with a winning time of 1:46.07 in the 200 back. That led a 1-2-3 IU finish with Schmuhl second (1:47.71) and Wells third (1:50.09). Miller also made it a sweep of his specialty events, winning the 200 breaststroke at 2:01.30. Trahin touched the wall third (2:02.33) and Hurley fourth (2:04.47).
Three of the top four finishers in the 500 freestyle were Hoosiers, led by Brent Aarons with a winning time of 4:30.42. Barbiere was second (4:31.81) and Schwab fourth (4:32.63). Indiana went 2-3-4 in the 100 butterfly with Miller second (48.91), Ress third (50.51) and Kyle Johnson fourth (50.78).
Indiana led the Boilermakers 154.5-90.5 heading into the final three events of the day. The Hoosiers added to that lead in the 200 individual medley after finishing 1-2-3. Trahin finished in 1:51.25, followed by Schmuhl (1:51.47) and Hurley (1:51.64).
The Hoosier quartet of Kanorr, Gerth, Barbiere and Ress took second in the 400 freestyle relay, coming in at 3:00.94. In the final event of the day, the Hoosiers went 1-2 on the 1-meter springboard with Darian Schmidt's winning score of 402.08. Dell'Orco placed second at 364.13.
