Virginia Tech Wins Battle of the Tech, Sweeps Georgia Tech, FGCU

ATLANTA, Georgia, November 3.THE Virginia Tech swimming and diving program swept the Georgia Tech tri-meet that included the Florida Gulf Coast women Saturday afternoon at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center Pool. The men rallied past Georgia Tech, 178-122, while the women defeated the Yellow Jackets, 221-79, and the Eagles, 175-125.

The men claimed eight titles and went 1-2-3 in all events Tech won, while the women secured seven events. Jake Ores led Tech on the men's side with two event titles and Kaylea Arnett and Heather Savage led the women with two of their own.

Ores secured the first title for the men, taking the 1650 freestyle with a time of 15:44.69 and later on took first in the 500 freestyle. The sophomore swam a time of 4:35.68, almost four seconds faster than second place, Alex Lutterbein (4:39.06).

Savage continues to dominate early in the season. The senior is undefeated in individual events as she took first in the 50 freestyle (23.49) and the 100 butterfly (56.00). The ACC Female Diver of the Week, Arnett was flawless by sweeping the diving portion.

In addition to today's leaders, seven other H2Okies claimed event titles this afternoon. Owen Burns won the men's 200 freestyle with a time of 1:41.99 and came in third in the 200 breaststroke.

Holly Harper touched the wall first in the women's 200 backstroke at the 56.91 mark and came in second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:02.85.

Morgan Latimer took the men's 200 butterfly with a time of 1:48.99 and also put in quality performances in the 500 freestyle and 400 IM, placing third in both events. Katarina Filova took the final title for the women, swimming a 51.82 in the 100 freestyle.

Tom Sheranek and Evan Nicely claimed the final titles for the men. Sheranek took the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:49.73, while Nicely won the 400 IM with a 3:59.29 mark to conclude the meet for Tech.

In addition to Arnett, in diving competition Ryan Hawkins led the men with second-place finishes in both events. Logan Shinholser took third in the 3-meter, while Jared Butts took third in the 1-meter.

Logan Kline finished with two third-place showings and Kelli Stockton placed second in the 3-meter and fourth in the 1-meter for the women.

Florida Gulf Coast ended the meet with eight titles of its own, while the Yellow Jackets took eight men and one women's event.

Tech will return home Thursday, Nov. 15 for the three-day H2Okie Fall Invitational. Competition will begin every day with a preliminary round at 10 a.m. followed by finals at 6 p.m. The meet will be streamed online through Hokie All-Access.
