Wyoming Women Take Down Colorado State

FORT COLLINS, Colorado, October 27. THE Wyoming Cowgirl swimming and diving team defeated the Colorado State Rams in the 2012 edition of the Border War on Saturday in Fort Collins. The Cowgirls took down the Rams 167.5-132.5. True freshman Nicole Hlavacek was a two-event winner for the Cowgirls.

“We started a little sluggish today and CSU came out firing,” Wyoming head coach Tom Johnson said. “Our freshman really picked up the slack today and swam very well. We won five of the last seven events down the stretch to help us win the meet.”

Colorado State opened the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay defeating the Cowgirl “A” (1:45.18) group of Jordan Denny, Morgan Hartigan, Jessy Badaracco and Melanie McDonough, by nearly a second with a time of 1:44.32.

The Cowgirls picked up their first win in the next event, the 1000 freestyle, with freshman Nicole Hlavacek winning her first collegiate event with a time 10:30.46. Fellow true freshman Keara Chang also won her first collegiate event in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:53.91.

After back-to-back Cowgirl victories the Rams' Jessica Shepard won the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.78. Cowgirl Denny finished the 100 back in third place with a time of 56.99.

Hartigan came back and won the 100 breaststroke for the Cowgirls with a time of 1:05.06. Badaracco won her first event of the afternoon in the 200 butterfly touching the wall with a time of 2:06.88. Following Badaracco's win, true freshman Emily Ridout won the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.11. The victory was Ridout's first collegiate win.

Following the 50 freestyle was the first diving break. Cowgirl Amanda Fay was UW's highest finisher in fourth place with a score of 211.88. Colorado State won its third-consecutive event in the 100 freestyle, with Breann Fuller touching the wall with a time of 52.88.

In her best event, Denny won the 200 backstroke by two full seconds with a time of 2:03.31. Junior Stephanie Young followed the Denny victory with a first-place finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:23.68. One event later, Hlavacek became the Cowgirls first dual-event winner for the touching the wall with a time of 5:07.63.

The Rams came back to win the 100 butterfly with Arianne Lujan touching the wall first (57.41). On the 3-meter springboard CSU's Arianna Milone won with a mark of 293.18. Junior Carolyn Wallace finished highest for the Cowgirls on the 3-meter with a score of 254.70.

Following the diving break, Badaracco won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:09.85. The Cowgirls “A” group of Ridout, Emily Stucky, McDonough and Denny closed the meet with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:31.80.

Wyoming swimming and diving will return to the pool on Saturday, Nov. 10, with a trip to the Air Force Academy to take on the Air Force Falcons.
