Longhorn Women Defeat Michigan and Indiana, Men Split with Michigan Loss

AUSTIN, Texas, October 26. SENIORS Kelsey Amundsen and Laura Sogar, junior diver Maren Taylor and sophomore Kaitlin Pawlowicz (PAWL-oh-wics) notched two wins apiece to pace Texas to a pair of victories over Indiana and Michigan Friday evening at UT's Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.

Texas defeated Indiana by a 172-128 count and hung a 217-83 defeat on the Wolverines. Indiana defeated Michigan by a 223-77 count.

“Our seniors were fantastic, but we had some really good swims from our underclassmen,” said UT head coach Carol Capitani. “Kaitlin Pawlowicz was awesome. Gretchen Jaques was probably the great surprise of the meet, with her 54 (54.83) in the 100 fly. She stepped up when we needed her and gave us a game- changer. (Laura) Sogar was terrific, and Bethany (Adams) and Kelsey (Amundsen) were great in the relays. We're going to keep working. We showed some character and toughness tonight.”

The Longhorns opened the day with a win in the 200-yard medley relay, where Sarah Denninghoff, Jaques, Amundsen and Bethany Adams finished in 1 minute, 41.57 seconds. Sogar notched her first win of the day in the 100 breaststroke, where she clocked 1:00.60, good for a NCAA “B” cut. Pawlowicz finished off a strong back half of her race to take a victory in the 200 butterfly in 1:58.72, good for another NCAA “B” cut. Amundsen led a one-two Texas finish in the 50 freestyle in 23.00, and Adams took second in 23.25.

After a short break, Adams came out on top in the 100 freestyle in 50.59, while junior Samantha Tucker took second in 50.80. Sogar put away an easy victory in the 200 breaststroke in 2:10.60 to easily clear the NCAA “B” standard. The Exeter, R.I., native is UT's record holder in both breaststroke events.
Amundsen tacked on her second win in the 100 butterfly, where she led a one- two Texas showing in 54.78. Jaques finished closely behind in 54.83. Pawlowicz produced a strong swim in the 400 IM and ran away with the victory in 4:16.35.

Taylor swept the diving events and led one-two Longhorn finishes in the one-meter and three-meter events. The All-American claimed the one-meter event with 323.80 points, while freshman Meghan Houston placed second with 285.55 points. Taylor was victorious in the three-meter event with 339.70 points, while senior Shelby Cullinan took second with 328.25 points.

Texas finished the evening with a one-two finish in the 400 freestyle relay. Texas' “A” relay of Amundsen, Tucker, Jaques and Adams took the win in 3:21.11. UT's Shelby Webber, Alex Hooper, Skylar Smith and Denninghoff took second in 3:22.16.

Texas will join Michigan and Indiana in an unscored meet Saturday at the Texas Swimming Center. The action gets underway at 10 a.m. Central.

RESULTS, MEN:

AUSTIN, Texas, October 26. TEXAS picked up victories from divers Will Chandler and William McCraney and swimmers Clay Youngquist and Kip Darmody, as the Horns split a pair of meets against Indiana and Michigan Friday evening at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.

Texas defeated Indiana by a 185-115 count and suffered a 194-106 defeat at the hands of Michigan, who also defeated Indiana by a 223-77 margin.

Chandler and McCraney paced a Texas sweep of the diving events with McCraney leading the way in the one-meter event with 334.60 points. Freshman Sean O'Brien took second with 330.50 points, and Chandler took third. Chandler went on to claim the three-meter event with 371.10 points. McCraney placed second with 356.75 points.

Youngquist, selected on Tuesday at the CollegeSwimming.com Division I Men's Swimmer of the Week, posted his second dominant win in as many outings in the 200-yard freestyle. Youngquist was victorious in 1:35.26, good for the fastest time in college swimming. Teammate Dax Hill, the event's defending NCAA champion, took third in 1:37.60.

Darmody added a win in the 200 backstroke in 1:45.21.

“We know we're working hard, and that's why we have meets to find out where we are,” said 35th-year head coach Eddie Reese. “We were slow off the blocks and had trouble on turns, and I get all the `credit' for that. For the most part, the team as a group did a super job of competing, and that's all I can ask.

“I put them in position to go fast or slow,” Reese added. “We have a pet name for October – we call it `Rocktober'. And then for November, it's `Slow-vember.' So, we're going into `Slow-vember.' We just started early.”

Texas will join Indiana and Michigan to compete in an unscored meet Saturday at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. The action begins at 10 a.m. Central.
