Women of Troy Take Day One Lead at SMU Invite

DALLAS, Texas, October 19. LED by two wins each by junior Kasey Carlson and freshman Jasmine Tosky, the USC women's swimming team raced out to a day one lead of the 2012 SMU Women's Swimming and Diving Classic in Dallas on Friday (Oct. 19).

In the six-team event in which eight swimmers from each team compete in a variety of events – with one swimmer only per `A' and `B' heats – USC swept all eight swimming events in the first half of the meet to score 185 points – and notching many NCAA consideration times in the process. North Carolina was second (149.5) and was followed by Florida (145), Texas (129), Louisville (116) and host SMU (111.5).

USC opened the meet with a win in the 400y medley relay as freshman Henriette Stenkvist, Carlson and freshmen Kendyl Stewart and Kasia Wilk won in 3:38.26.

Junior Meghan Hawthorne followed with a win in the 400y IM in 4:07.21, edging Florida Olympian Elizabeth Beisel, who was second in 4:07.59. Beisel was third in the race at the 2012 NCAAs. Hawthorne's winning time was under her PR from NCAAs (4:07.55). Junior Stina Gardell won the `B' heat of the race in 4:09.16.

Tosky won the first of her two races, claiming the 200y free in 1:45.14. Senior Haley Anderson was second in the `B' final in 1:48.69. Carlson won her first race with a 22.65 in the 50y free while Wilk was third in the `B' final (23.54).

Tosky came back to win the 100y fly in 52.66, less than a tenth of a second off of USC's best effort for all of last season. Gardell was fourth in the `B' final (55.37).

Stewart won the 100y back in 53.41, less than a second off of Troy's best for last season. Stenkvist was second in the `B' final in 55.04.

Carlson won her second race with a 1:00.20 in the 100y breast while Hawthorne won the `B' final of the race in 1:02.03.

USC closed the first night with a win in the 800y free relay as Tosky, Gardell, Anderson and Hawthorne swam to a 7:10.45, edging North Carolina's 7:10.87.

On 1-meter springboard, freshman Sam Adams was fifth with 232.05.

The two-meet will wrap up Saturday, beginning at 4:30 p.m. CT.
