Kansas Rides Bryce Hinde Wave to Road Win Over Rice

HOUSTON, Texas, October 6. FRESHMAN Bryce Hinde set a pool record, winning two events and assisting in a third, in a 166-132, victory for Kansas over Rice, in the Jayhawks' first dual meet of the season Saturday afternoon at the Rice Aquatics Center Competition Pool.

In her collegiate debut, Hinde was involved in 80 points for the Jayhawks (1-0). The Fulton, Kan., native broke the pool record in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.78), won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:19.03) and swam the second leg on the first-place 200-yard medley relay team (1:44.21).

“I am very excited,” Kansas head coach Clark Campbell said. “I was looking forward to her racing, because she had a very good (intrasquad) meet last week and she really turned it up a notch today.”

Freshmen Haley Molden, Alina Vats and Chelsie Miller also made victorious debuts for the Jayhawks. Molden won the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.77), Vats won the 100-yard backstroke (57.64) and Miller took the 400-yard IM (4:26.57). Despite fighting illness, senior captain Brooke Brull and sophomore Deanna Marks were also able to grab victories in the 200-yard backstroke (2:03.05) and 200-yard butterfly (2:04.40), respectively. For Marks, that is her best in-season time of her collegiate career in the 200-yard butterfly.

“We definitely took a couple steps forward today,” Campbell said. “Each meet you want to improve and get yourself ready to go for the championship scene later on. If you are on for the bigger meets, that just carries momentum into the next.”

For Rice, sophomore Casey Clark also had a record setting day, breaking the pool record in the 100-yard butterfly (55.83). Teammate, sophomore Erin Flanigan, had a solid meet, as well, winning the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:13.69) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:01.09), in the loss to the Jayhawks.

The dual against Rice was just the start of the team's trip down south. The Jayhawks will take advantage of the warm Texas weather and the Owls' outdoor training facility, to get in some extra work over fall break.

“Right now we are switching from race mode to training mode,” Campbell said. “This will be our last opportunity to train outside until January, when we head to the west coast and Hawaii. We will get in, get four really good workouts and head home.”

Kansas will open the home portion of its schedule against perennial national power Minnesota on Oct. 20. The Minnesota meet will also serve as Senior Day for the program and eight Jayhawk seniors will be honored before the competition.
