Iowa State Hosts Cardinal vs. Gold Intrasquad

AMES, Iowa, October 5. THE Iowa State swimming and diving team hosted its annual intrasquad meet Friday night at Beyer Pool. Although the cardinal team put up a strong fight, the gold team finished the evening ahead with nine event victories and final score of 120-84.

The gold squad started off the evening with a first place finish in the 200 medley relay. The team of Bre Loeschke, Ali Stearns, Sarah Norris and Katie Vollhaber just out-touched the cardinal squad, finishing with a time of 1:48.12. The cardinal squad took second and third with times of 1:48.42 and 1:56.69, respectively.

“I was really pleased the way the women raced against each other tonight,” head coach Duane Sorenson said. “We had some really great times tonight.”

In the 200 IM the cardinal team saw their first victory of the night with junior Imelda Wistey touching the wall with a time of 2:10.26

“Imelda is starting off where she left off last year, which is really great to see,” Sorenson said.

Sophomore Amanda Paulson finished first in the 50 freestyle event, earning the cardinal team its second victory for the meet with a time of 24.34. Vollhaber (24.52) and Norris (25.15) finished second and third, respectively.

“Amanda Paulson had a really great 50 free,” Sorenson said. “She was a little rough in the 100 but it was great to see Vollhaber do so well in the 50 free.”

Norris earned another win for the gold squad in the 100 butterfly, finishing with a time of 59.42.

In the 100 freestyle event, Vollhaber took first with a time of 53.72. Paulson finished in second for the cardinal team clocking in at 56.09. Bri Carlberg of the gold squad took third, touching the wall at 56.18.

Wistey earned her second win for the evening with a time of 1:05.94 in the 100 breaststroke. Stearns and Marley Suckow of the gold squad finished with times of 1:06.87 and 1:07.59, respectively.

Kleiner also earned another individual event victory in the 200 freestyle. The sophomore finished with a time of 1:56.27.

“She has been training really well in practice,” Sorenson noted. “Tonight she really stood up and showed herself in both the 200 and 500 freestyle.”

To finish the evening, the gold squad took first in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Sarah Deis, Carlberg, Loeschke and Kleiner clocked in with a time of 1:41.14. The cardinal team of Kristy Kunkel, Hayley Krzeczowski, Samantha Fossum and Alex Gustafson finished in second with a time of 1:41.76

In the diving well, freshman Elyse Brouillette lead the gold team on both the 1-meter and 3-meter board.

On 1-meter, Brouillette finished with a score of 269.25. Jessica Henderson of the cardinal team took second with a final score of 262.35 and Megan Cohea finished third for the gold, with a score of 243.00.

Brouillette led on the 3-meter board with a score of 269.70. Dani Davis and Henderson took second and third for the cardinal team, with scores of 253.35 and 225.60 respectively.

The Cyclones will travel to Minneapolis, Minn. next Friday, Oct. 12, to face the University of Minnesota. The meet is slated to begin at 5 p.m CDT.
