Mission Viejo’s Tyler Fenwick To Be Named Tennessee’s Associate Coach

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee, June 9. TENNESSEE head coach Matt Kredich continues to assemble the staff of his newly-merged men's and women's programs, and has called on another former graduate assistant to return to the fold. Mission Viejo's Tyler Fenwick will be named Tennessee's Associate Coach, with a focus on recruiting as well as growing the distance program.

Fenwick, who joined the Mission Viejo staff in 2009, has put his stamp on the distance program with the Nadadores as his swimmers have broken 13 team records, four regional records as well as one National Age Group standard. Additionally, he has helped 13 athletes to their first Junior National standard, 10 to their first Senior National standard and three to their first U.S. Olympic Trials cut. Since 2010, Fenwick's swimmers have posted 36 NAG Top 10 times with four top-ranked swims. Furthermore, Fenwick coached a pair of U.S. National Junior Teamers (David Heron and Janardan Burns) last year with the two also making the U.S. National Team this year. Heron went on to win the national title in the 5K open water event, with Burns (second) and Heron (third) taking a pair of podium spots in the 10K. Fenwick leaves Mission Viejo as its men's national team coach.

Prior to joining Mission Viejo in 2009, Fenwick served as a graduate assistant with Tennessee's men's team, while pursuing his M.S. in Sports Management. Fenwick also served as the head coach for the Tennessee Masters program, as well as an assistant coach with Tennessee Aquatics and Pilot Aquatic Club. During his time in Knoxville, Fenwick helped coach Olympic silver medalist Christine Magnuson as well as served as the primary coach for Davis Tarwater, who won gold with the men's 800 free relay at the 2009 FINA World Championships.

On top of already working with Mission Viejo legend Bill Rose, Fenwick also has another legend as a mentor as well — Richard Shoulberg. Fenwick is Philadelphia born-and-raised, and graduated from Germantown Academy in 1999. After graduating from William and Mary in 2004 with a B.A. in English, Fenwick returned home to coach at Germantown, working for Shoulberg from 2004-07 before moving on to the Big Orange.

“I will forever be indebted to Coach Rose for giving me an opportunity be a part of one of the most storied and successful teams in the history of our sport,” Fenwick told Swimming World. “From my first day in Mission Viejo he took me under his wing, providing me with thoughtful guidance, expert leadership and endless support. I have been blessed over the last 3 years to be able to work with the most outstanding groups of high school athletes in the country. Their dedication, passion and enthusiasm were a daily inspiration and their success a testament to their hard work and character. The Nadadores will always be a major part of my life, they are my family. I will look back on my time in Southern California fondly; it was such an awesome ride!

“Following the US Olympic Team Trials, I will be moving to Knoxville to begin the next chapter of my career. I am excited to announce that I will be joining Matt Kredich at the University of Tennessee. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to work with some of the top student athletes in the country. With unparalleled facilities, tremendous support and one of the most vibrant young coaching staff's in the NCAA, everything is in place for Tennessee to ascend the college and international swimming ranks. After serving two years at Tennessee as a Graduate Assistant, I could not be more proud to be returning to my alma mater. Great days are ahead for Tennessee Swimming! Go Vols!”

This move is part of a full staff makeover that also included Ashley Jahn joining the staff this week with news that former top women's assistant coach Jennifer Woodruff stepped down after having her first child to focus on her family. The former Jen Arndt married Tennessee's men's tennis associate head coach Chris Woodruff in the summer of 2010.

Along with Jahn and Fenwick, the current makeup of the staff consists of head diving coach Dave Parrington, who has been coaching the Vols for more than two decades after first arriving on Rocky Top in 1990, as well as Bret Lundgaard, who joined UT recently after spending three seasons as an assistant at Army. With the addition of Fenwick, the Volunteers are nearing the complete overhaul of a newly-merged coaching staff. Along with Alabama having a similar clean slate, the Southeastern Conference looks to have a strong influx of fresh faces on the recruiting trails.
