FEDERAL WAY, Washington, March 23. CALIFORNIA's Tom Shields posted a double this evening, following his 100 fly triumph with an underwater clinic on the finale lap of the men's 100 back at the NCAA Division I Men's Championships.

Shields, who had been battling Stanford's David Nolan through the rest of the race, smashed the field with an unbelievable final turn to post a 44.86. That is the fifth-fastest time ever behind Ryan Lochte (44.60), Ben Hesen (44.72), Matt Grevers (44.82) and Albert Subirats (44.83). With the win, Shields defended his 2011 title — the first to do so since Grevers won in 2005-06. Shields is also the only two-time winner in Golden Bear history.

Nolan placed second in 45.53, while Texas' Cole Cragin took third in 45.89. Auburn's Kyle Owens (45.98), California's Marcin Tarczynski (46.02), Arizona's Mitchell Friedemann (46.18), Texas' Kip Darmody (46.41) and Penn State's Nathaniel Savoy (48.66) also competed in the finale.

California's Mathias Gydesen snared the consolation heat victory with a 46.52, while Michigan's Miguel Ortiz took second in 46.63. Auburn's Max Murphy (46.92), Ohio State's Andrew Elliott (47.11), Tennessee's Ricky Henahan (47.26), Stanford's Matt Swanston (47.31), Indiana's James Wells (47.58) and Louisville's Brendon Andrews (50.15) comprised the rest of the B final.

California built a commanding lead with 345.5 points, while Texas held second with 280 points. Arizona (248), Stanford (225) and Michigan (171) comprised the rest of the top five.
