NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships: Back-To-Back Wildcat; Austen Thompson Scorches 400 IM

FEDERAL WAY, Washington, March 23. THE Arizona Wildcats opened the night with back-to-back victories at the NCAA Division I Men's Championships. An event after Arizona downed the American record in the 200 medley relay, Austen Thompson moved to eighth all time in the men's 400-yard IM. Thompson clocked a sterling time of 3:39.15 to become the first Wildcat to ever win the distance medley event.

Michigan's Kyle Whitaker came up a bit short of winning the Wolverines' 11th title in the event. Whitaker took second in 3:41.37, while Wisconsin's Michael Weiss placed third in 3:43.12.

Indiana's Sam Trahin (3:44.37), California's Adam Hinshaw (3:44.74), Stanford's Drew Cosgarea (3:45.07), Florida's Eduardo Solaeche-Gomez (3:45.12) and Texas' Nick D'Innocenzo (3:45.22) also vied for the NCAA title.

Florida's Dan Wallacace captured the consolation heat in 3:44.36, while Texas' Austin Surhoff took second in 3:44.39. California's Ben Hinshaw placed third in 3:44.65, while Georgia's Andrew Gemmell (3:45.89), Stanford's Matt Thompson (3:45.59), North Carolina's Tom Luchsinger (3:46.03), Georgia's Peter Benner (3:47.42) and Penn State's Scott Marino (3:48.66) also scored team points in the B final.

California became the first team past 200 points with a leading tally of 211.5 points. Stanford remained second with 185 points, while Arizona stood third with 178 points. Texas (176.5) and Auburn (138.5) held fourth and fifth, while Michigan (127) lurked on the outside of the top five.
