NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships: Wayne State Women, Drury Men Lead After Day Two; Andrey Seryy Downs Historic Record

MANSFIELD, Texas, March 15. DAY two of the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships is in the books in Mansfield, Texas with two more events witnessing NCAA Division II records being set.

Wayne State's women led after day two with 261 points, while Drury stood second with 260. Wayne State is looking to upend Drury for the first time in four years after placing runner-up to them the previous three years. UC San Diego (213), Grand Canyon (136) and Tampa (103) stood third through fifth in the women's race.

Drury jumped into a day two lead amongst the men with 248 points. UC San Diego held second with 205 points, while Grand Canyon moved to third with 170 points. Wingate (151) and Incarnate Word (150) held onto fourth and fifth after day two. Drury has won the previous seven national titles.

Wayne State's Andrey Seryy clipped Wingate's Iaroslav Denysenko, 1:35.61 to 1:35.63, for the men's 200 free title, as both bested the NCAA Division II record of 1:35.81 set by John Keppeler of UC Davis back in 1993. GVSU's Aaron Beebe placed third in 1:35.97.

Wayne State's Ashley Corriveau, Perezoria Martinez, Kayla Scott and Ana Azambuja won the women's 200 free relay in 1:32.02, while Drury (1:32.50) and UC San Diego (1:32.64) placed second and third. Drury's Nicholas McCarthy, Olexandr Padalkin, Christopher Kohler and Vladimir Sidorkin topped the men's 200 free relay in 1:19.77. GCU (1:19.98) and UC San Diego (1:20.71) completed the top three.

Southern Connecticut's Amanda Thomas added the 400 IM to her 200 IM victory from day one with a 4:16.25 this evening. UCSD's Alexandra Henley (4:19.29) and Drury's Deanna Sorenson (4:21.24) finished second and third. Wingate's Marko Blazevski claimed the men's 400 IM in 3:50.56. GCU's Brian Morrison (3:51.57) and UCSD's Adam Rice (3:53.77) picked up second and third.

GCU's Mychala Lynch posted a 53.81 to win the women's 100 fly. Alaska Fairbanks' Margot Adams took second in 54.96, while Wayne State's Gloria Martinez Perez finished third in 55.07. Wingate's Liubomyr Lemeshko clinched the men's 100 fly in 47.29. Drury's Carlos Viveros (47.91) and Incarnate Word's James Shake (48.15) completed the podium.

Wayne State's Ana Azambuja clocked a 1:48.16 to win the women's 200 free. UCSD's Anjali Shakya (1:48.45) and Drury's Tiffany Bell (1:48.72) claimed second and third.

Wayne State's Ana Azambuja, Kayla Scott, Perezoria Martinez and Ashley Corriveau won the women's 400 medley relay in 3:41.20. UCSD (3:45.05) and Florida Southern (3:45.85) finished second and third. Florida Southern's Jeffrey Halfacre, Miguel Ferreira, David Janzen and Stephen Swan set the NCAA DII record in the men's 400 medley relay with a 3:12.43. The swim cleared the 3:12.99 set by Florida Southern during prelims, which smashed the 3:14.15 clocked by Wayne State in 2009. Bridgeport (3:13.39) and GVSU (3:13.82) placed second and third tonight.

In diving, St. Cloud's Christopher White (556.80) and Luke Weber (556.10) took first and second in the men's one-meter. Incarnate Word's Justin McDonald took third with 523.45 points.
