Northwestern vs. Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana, November 5. LYAM Dias and Lauren Roth were the standout performers of the day as the Purdue swimming and diving teams posted a double dual meet sweep of Northwestern Saturday afternoon to cap a successful weekend at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center that featured four team wins in 24 hours.

The Purdue men won 14 of the 16 events en route to a final score of 182-116. The Purdue women finished first in 12 of the 16 events to win the meet, 171-122.

Roth won a Purdue-high three events (200 free, 500 free and 200 fly) and also swam the anchor leg on the victorious 400 free relay team. The senior captured five individual events on the weekend.

Dias dominated his two events Saturday, winning the 200 breaststroke by seven seconds and the 200 individual medley by more than three seconds. He posted new team season-best times in both events.

Eduard Galdeano was involved in the most exciting finish of the day. An impressive final kick over the final 25 yards gave him a split of 26.84 to win the 200 butterfly by six one-hundredths of a second over Northwestern's Charlie Rimkus.

There was another tight finish in the 50 freestyle as Matt Friede and Ben Ziolkowski tied for first with times of 20.58. The sprint free specialists also teamed up with Danny Tucker and Ben Wachtel to post an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:19.83 while winning the 200 free relay. Tucker, Friede and Wachtel all posted sub 20-second splits.

Lauren Gustafson (50 and 100 free) swept the sprint free events and also teamed with Carly Mercer, Lauren Nichols and Roth on the victorious 400 free relay. Mercer swam the anchor on the winning 200 medley relay team while also finishing second to Gustafson in both sprint free events.

The freshmen continued to contribute for the women as well. Rhiannon Sheets (100 fly) and Amy Katz (100 back) both won an individual event and swam on the winning 200 medley relay. Fellow freshman Megan Gallagher won the 1,000 freestyle for her second victory of the weekend.

Brian Kiel, Wachtel and diver Jamie Bissett were also two-time individual winners for the men. Kiel finished the weekend having won the 100 and 200 back in both meets. Wachtel captured the 200 free and 100 fly. Bissett swept the men's diving events.

Christina Jacobs was honored as the women's Boilermaker Award recipient after the meet. She was selected by Mercer, who won the award Friday in the dual meet win versus Notre Dame.

Purdue returns to action Friday, Nov. 18 for dual meet action at Iowa. The men will also compete against Ohio State in Iowa City. The meet will be held at Iowa's new Campus Recreation and Wellness Center, which is set to serve as the host of the Big Ten Championships for both the men and women this season.
