Miami vs. Houston

HOUSTON, Texas, October 21. FRESHMAN Lucy Worrall collected three wins Friday to help the University of Miami swimming & diving team upend homestanding Houston, 136.5-103.5, at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center. Miami won its second meet in as many years in Houston, also defeating the Cougars by a count of 139-103 last year behind a strong performance from Whitney Stephenson.
On the day, Miami took nine first place times/scores in the 13-event dual meet.

On Friday, the Canes began the day with a season-best and winning time of 1:46.51 in the 200 yard medley relay, also turning in an NCAA "B" cut performance in the process. The team was comprised of Hannah Kling, Dana Hatic, Kayla Smith and Kelsi Hall.

Junior Christine Anderson posted a personal-best time of 10:18.82 in the 1000 yard freestyle, earning second place in the process. Freshman Lucy Worrall picked up her first win as a Hurricane, taking first place in the 200 yard freestyle with a winning mark of 1:52.63. The time for Worrall earned her an NCAA "B" cut. Hall was sixth in the race in a time of 2:00.56, followed by Jenna Beyer (2:07.49).

Junior transfer Celeste Degen earned the win in the 50 yard freestyle as she touched the wall at 24.07, followed in order by Kayla Smith (24.60) and Katherine Nicholson (25.14) to help the Canes complete the podium sweep in the race. Ally McPherson was sixth overall in a time of 26.22.

UMiami went second and third in the 200 yard individual medley as Kling (2:07.65) picked up an NCAA provisional qualifying mark, and teammate Roxanne Meyer finished in 2:11.45.

In the diving well, it was Lindsay Lester taking second place on the 3-meter springboard, picking up a total score of 319.95. Freshman Kara McCormack was third in the event with a score of 308.03. Lester would bounce back for the 1-meter victory, registering a score of 310.20. McCormack would place fourth (271.20).

Back in the swimming lanes, Worrall earned her second victory of the day as she turned in a winning mark of 56.98 and an NCAA "B" cut performance in the 100 yard butterfly. It was teammate Haley Nicholson in third place with a finishing time of 59.28, followed by senior Erin Simpson (1:00.63).

In the 100 yard freestyle, Hall took the win with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 51.90, and teammates Degen (53.93) and Katherine Nicholson (54.91) followed in third and fourth, respectively. UM went first and second in the 100 yard backstroke, using the winning time of 58.22 put up by Kling – also an NCAA "B" cut mark – as well as Meyer (58.73).

Worrall picked up her third win of the evening in the 500 yard freestyle with yet another NCAA provisional time, this one in 5:01.80, while Anderson was fourth at 5:11.03. However, it would be Anderson taking the top podium spot in the 100 yard breaststroke in a mark of 1:05.65, earning her an NCAA "B" cut time. Hatic picked up an NCAA provisional mark in a second place time of 1:06.00.

The Hurricanes finished the day with a second place time of 3:38.06 in the 400 yard freestyle relay, using the team of Kayla Smith, Katherine Nicholson, Meyer and Degen.

On the evening, Miami turned in a total of nine NCAA "B" cut times.

The Canes will get back to the water again Saturday as they remain in Houston for a dual meet with Rice beginning at 11 a.m. Central.
