Radford, Pfeiffer vs. Virginia Military Institute

RADFORD, Virginia, October 15. THREE freshmen combined to break five school records, and a relay record fell as well as the VMI women's swimming and diving team opened its season Saturday afternoon in Radford, Va. VMI (0-2) dropped both ends of the tri-meet, falling to Pfeiffer (112-79) and host Radford (142-56). Radford also knocked off Pfeiffer 136-69.

MacKenzie Perkins notched two of the new records, finishing second in a pair of events. She clocked in at 26.39 in the 50-yard freestyle, but in perhaps the day's most notable effort, Perkins posted a 1:03.63 time in the 100 backstroke to finish second. That effort was nearly nine seconds under the previous school record, set just last season, but it was not her best 100 back time of the day. The new school record is Perkins' 1:02.73, which she swam in the 400 medley relay.

Magill, VMI's lone participant in the diving events, broke school records in both the one-meter and three-meter disciplines. She placed second in both, posting a mark of 245.05 in the three-meter version and 217.95 in the one-meter.

The final individual record to fall came in the 100 freestyle, which saw Meghan O'Halloran finish third in a time of 57.49. VMI also broke its 400 medley relay record, as Perkins, O'Holloran, Mia Cunicelli and Katheryne Austin combined to finish third, recording a time of 4:24.19. That is 25 seconds under the previous school record.

O'Holloran was also in action in the 200 free, clocking in at 2:09.23 for a fourth-place finish, while Cunicelli was fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.91).

VMI swimming and diving will return to action Friday, Oct. 28, taking part in a quad meet versus NJIT, Manhattan and Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Md.

Dallas Disbro won both diving events, and VMI captured seven events overall to defeat Pfeiffer, 125-93, in the season opener for Keydet swimming and diving, contested Saturday afternoon in Radford, Va.

Disbro, who was all-conference in both disciplines last season, posted a mark of 245.41 in the three-meter event, while recording a score of 229.30 in the one-meter version. Five different Keydets grabbed VMI's other five wins, with three of those also recording a runner-up version in another event.

Freshman Nick Mathis won the 500-yard freestyle, clocking in at 5:04.21, and leading a Keydet sweep of the top three spots in the event, as Matt Dale (5:05.59) and Jeff Whiteman (5:08.89) finished second and third, respectively. In the other, more lengthy freestyle event, Jake Shafer won with a 10:20.43 time. Dale was second in that event as well.

Connor McMahon made a favorable impression in his first collegiate event, winning the 50 free in 22.50, and also finishing second in the 100-free. McMahon led a Keydet sweep of the top three spots in the shorter distance, as John Kelly (22.85) and Matt Elliott (23.13) rounded out the podium finishers, while Elliott finished third in the 100-yard discipline as well.

Veteran James Goodwillie opened his senior year with a strong effort, as he won the 400 IM with a 4:25.31 time, besting runner-up Mathis by over eight seconds. Goodwillie was also third in the 100 backstroke, where he clocked in at 56.82.

VMI's final win came in the 200 free, where Kodiak Bowers edged out teammate Stephen Lloyd for the win, as Bowers posted a 1:49.75 to Lloyd' second-place 1:49.88.

Finally, Shafer was second in the 100 butterfly, thanks to a 55.04 time.
