West Chester vs. Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG, Pennsylvania, October 7. THE Shippensburg University women's swimming team received several solid performances – including two event victories by sophomore Julia Brown – in its opening meet of the season, a 191-70 home loss to West Chester in a dual meet on Friday evening.

Brown was victorious in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle with times of 24.60 and 53.89 seconds, respectively. A trio of Raiders posted second-place finishes: Junior Julia Brownrigg swam a 1:01.62 in the 100-yard backstroke, senior Kristen McCandless finished at 5:16.49 in the 500-yard freestyle and sophomore Sarah Hanson completed the 50-yard butterfly in 28.58 seconds.

"This is the best that we have competed in a season-opening meet in several seasons," head coach Tim Verge said after Friday's meet. "We had some phenomenal swims and this performance was a good start that should truly help us as we move forward."

The 200-yard medley relay team consisting of senior Kate Johnson, senior Rachael Ballard, Brownrigg and Brown finished just .12 seconds behind West Chester for a second-place 1:51.47.

Shippensburg returns to action at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, October 18 at Bloomsburg.
