PAC-12, SEC Schools Kick Off Season With Wins

BOULDER, Colorado, October 2. SEVERAL top college teams saw action in the pool in a light weekend for dual meets.

On Friday, the Stanford women took on local rival San Jose State, coming out on top by a score of 167-125. Sophomore Andie Taylor took home wins in the 200 fly (2:02.02) and 200 IM (2:04.08) while freshman Maddy Schaefer was victorious in the 100 back (57.70) and 100 free (51.26). Stephanie Phipps ruled the diving well, posting first place finishes in both the one-meter (243.6) and three-meter (260.5) competitions.

Meanwhile, the Tennessee women faced off against UNC-Wilmington on Friday, winning all but two events in the meet. Jenny Connolly raced to wins in the 200 back (2:04.22) and 200 fly (2:03.74) while teammate Lindsay Gendron added a trifecta of first place finishes in the 100 free (51.00), 100 fly (56.20) and 200 IM (2:05.08).

Louisiana State took down Tulane in Baton Rouge on Friday night. Juniors Jana Ruimerman (10:20.74, 1000 free) and Sara Haley (1:59.51, 200 fly) posted impressive times en route to victory.

Not to be outdone by the Cardinal women, the Stanford men put on an impressive showing against UC Santa Cruz on Saturday, sweeping the events. David Nolan and Thomas Stephens, both freshmen, were victorious in the 100 breast and 100 free, respectively. Results were not available for the meet.

In other action, the Florida State women claimed victories over Florida Gulf Coast and Miami in a tri-meet, while James Madison won a quad meet against Marshall, Campbell and Radford. The Clemson Tigers both earned season-opening victories against Davidson on Saturday afternoon.
