Florida State Garnet vs. Gold Meet

TALLAHASSEE, Florida, September 23. IT was a one-sided show this evening at the Morcom Aquatics Center as both the men's and women's garnet squads bested the gold teams in close battles with the scores of 148-144 for the ladies and 154-136 on the men's side.

"I was very excited about the contributions from all of the classes," head coach Neil Harper said. "All across the board we showed what we can do. They were competitive and they swam quite fast considering our week of training."

Senior Mateo De Angulo led the way for garnet team, posting three first place finishes in the 1000 free (9:37.49), 500 free (4:33.38) and 200 fly (1:51.96).
In addition, freshman Josh Friedel contributed his two individual first places to the garnet's tally as he swept both backstroke events with times of 51.63 in the 100 and 1:51.12 in the 200. Also, he swam the lead-off leg for the winning 200 medley relay team.

For the garnet ladies, sophomore Julia Henkel won both the 200 free (1:51.62) and the 200 IM (2:05.37) and junior Kristine Polley took both 100 (1:06.02) and 200 (2:20.04) breaststroke events.
On the boards, junior Ariel Rittenhouse won the diving event with a score of 223.05 for the garnet team.

The men's gold team was led by junior Trice Bailey, who won both the 50 (20.95) and 100 free (45.85). Sophomore Alex Rodriguez contributed two first places in both the 100 (58.22) and 200 (2:07.12) breast.
Sophomore Tom Neubacher won the diving event for the gold team.

The ladies on the gold team took five out of the six free events. Senior Charlotte Broadbent outlasted the field in both the 1000 (10:25.88) and 500 (5:04.37) free and sophomore Tiffany Oliver claimed victory in both the 50 (23.58) and 100 (51.52) sprint free events. The gold girls also won the 200 free relay at the end of the meet.

In addition, senior Stephanie Sarandros turned in a pair of firsts in the 100 (57.35) and 200(2:02.82) back events.

The lady Seminoles will be in action Oct. 1 as they travel to Coral Gabels, Fla. for a contest with ACC rival Miami. Florida Gulf Coast will also be in on the competition.

"I'm looking forward to it," Harper said. "It's a good opportunity for the team to come together, do their thing and swim fast."
