Water Polo World Championships Begin This Weekend

MONTREAL, Canada, JULY 14. THE FINA Water Polo World Championships will begin on Sunday in Montreal with 16 teams in the men’s and women’s competitions. The United States women, coming off a bronze medal at the Olympic Games, open the event with a matchup against Spain on Sunday. Meanwhile, the U.S. men get rolling on Monday with a clash with Japan.

The USA women will be coached by Heather Moody while the United States men are under the guidance of Guy Baker. Both squads recently participated in the FINA World League competition, with the United States women advancing to the Super Finals in Russia next month. The men failed to advance out of the qualifying round.

The members of the United States men’s team include: Brian Alexander, Tony Azevedo, Ryan Bailey, Nathaniel Bennett, Brandon Brooks, Shea Buckner, Spencer Dornin, Peter Hudnut, J.W. Krumpholz, Michael March, Rick Merlo, Jeff Powers, Jesse Smith and Adam Wright.

The members of the United States women’s team include: Emily Feher, Erika Figge, Natalie Golda, Jaime Hipp, Kristina Kunkel, Ericka Lorenz, Thalia Munro, Heather Petri, Kelly Rulon, Aimee Stachowski, Moriah Van Norman, Brenda Villa, Drue Wawrzynski and Lauren Wenger.
