Site of 2012 Olympic Games to be Determined Wednesday -- July 5, 2005
SINGAPORE, July 5. IN less than a day, the site of the 2012 Olympic Games will be announced. The International Olympic Committee is currently meeting in Singapore and will decide around 7:30 a.m. (EDT) Wednesday on the host city for an Olympiad seven years away. The finalists are Paris, London, New York, Madrid and Moscow.
Heading into the vote to determine the host city for 2012 – an election that requires a majority – Paris is considered the favorite, with London and New York viewed as the main challengers. Four of the cities, excluding New York, are national capitals. Before the voting begins, each city will make a final presentation to the IOC selection committee.
New York has sent a strong delegation to Singapore, a group that includes Australian superstar Ian Thorpe. A long-time fan of the city, Thorpe has indicated that he will continue competing through 2012 if the Games are awarded to the Big Apple. Currently, Thorpe plans on making the 2008 Games in Beijing, China his last Olympiad.
