Greece Topples United States in FINA World League Water Polo Action

LA JOLLA, Calif., USA, July 4. THE first round of preliminary play of the FINA World League Water Polo Series came to an end on Sunday with the United States dropping a 7-5 decision to Greece. The matchup featured the silver medalist (Greece) and bronze medalist (United States) from last summer’s Olympic Games.

Greece held a two-goal advantage at halftime, but had that margin cut in half during the third quarter. The United States, however, could not score the game-tying goal. Despite the loss, the U.S. moved into the second round of preliminary competition, which is scheduled to begin on Thursday. After the second round, the top four teams will advance to the World League Super Finals in August.

Goals for the United States were scored by Natalie Golda, Erika Figge, Moriah Van Norman, Ericka Lorenz and Thalia Munro. Emily Feher was credited with three saves.
