1999 Phillips 66 National Championships: Day 4 Prelims

SWIMMERS FLY IN PRELIMS

By Phillip Whitten

Minneapolis, MN – Jenny Thompson and Bryan Jones swam very fast prelim times on the fourth day of the USA National Championships this morning. Thompson, who already has won two events, qualified first in the women’s 100m fly in an easy 59.12, ahead of Misty Hyman (59.49) and Pan Am champ, Karen Campbell (1:00.09). There was speculation that Thompson will be shooting for Mary T. Meagher’s 1981 world mark of 57.93 tonight.

Texas Aquatics’ Bryan Jones, who has been having the meet of a lifetime and already has won a spot on the Pan Pac team, clocked 52.90 in the men’s 100m fly, the fastest time by an American in two years. Jones, who gave up a spot on the Pan Am team to try for the Pan Pacs, had earlier finished second in the 100m free in 49.43 and split 48.68 on TA’s record-setting 400m free relay.

In other prelim action, Ed Moses, wearing a full-length Adidas body suit, clocked 1:01.72 to top the men’s 100m breast, ahead of Steve West, 1:02.75. Megan Quann topped the women in the same event at 1:09.43.

Lenny Krayzelburg, who set an American record in the 200m back yesterday, was the top qualifier in the 100m back at 55.17, followed by Neil Walker 55.63. Lea Maurer (1:02.05) and BJ Bedford (1:02.29) were the only women under 1:03 in the 100m back.

Chad Carvin (3:54.60) and Mark Warkentin (3:54.75) led the way in the men’s 400m free. Brooke Bennett clocked 4:12.60 in the women’s 400m, more than three seconds faster than the next qualifier.
