Site of 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials Will be Announced on Tuesday

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., USA, June 27. THE site of the 2008 Olympic Trials will be announced late Tuesday afternoon. After a successful outdoors run last year in Long Beach (Calif.), the next Trials will be indoors. The question: Where? The finalists to host are San Antonio (Texas), St. Paul (Minn.) and Omaha (Neb.). Chuck Wielgus, USA Swimming’s Executive Director, will make the announcement during a 4 p.m. (EDT) conference call.

The 2008 Trials, regardless of location, will be held from June 30-July 7 and will determine the United States squad that will compete at the Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Wherever the event is held, it will mark the first time the competition is held in a temporary pool in an indoor facility. In Long Beach, the event was held in a portable pool constructed on a parking lot.

If San Antonio is selected to host, the competition will be held at the Alamodome and will feature seating in the vicinity of 13,000. The selection of St. Paul would place the meet at the Xcel Energy Center, home of the NHL’s Minnesota Wild. As for Omaha, it has proposed the use of Qwest Center.
