Duboscq, Mellouli Among Winners on Third Day of Mediterranean Games -- June 26, 2005

ALMERIA, Spain, June 26. THE Mediterranean Games continued Sunday with more fast swimming, a positive development with the World Championships on the horizon. Considering the quality times produced over the last few weeks — at various competitions — Montreal should be spectacular.

Following up on his 50-meter freestyle victory from Saturday, Algeria’s Salim Iles prevailed in the 100 free with a mark of 49.10. That swim was enough for Iles to hold off Italy’s Filippo Magnini (49.37). During his 50 free triumph, Iles checked in with a performance of 22.31.

France’s Hugues Duboscq and Tunisia’s Ous Mellouli each secured their second victories of the Games. Duboscq touched the wall in 2:13.98 in the 200 breast and fought off a challenge by Italy’s Paolo Bossini (2:15.15). As for Mellouli, the Olympian cruised in the 400 individual medley, winning the event in 4:14.34.

Italy’s Alessia Filippi and Elisa Pasini also claimed first-place finishes. Filippi won the 400 I.M. in an impressive mark of 4:40.61 and Pasini was first to the wall in the 1,500 freestyle (16:30.16). Other triumphs were corralled by France’s Celine Couderc in the 100 free (55.46) and Spain’s Sara Perez in the 200 breast (2:28.87).
