Mellouli Lowers Own African Record in the 200 Individual Medley

ALMERIA, Spain, June 24. LAST summer, Ous Mellouli left the Athens Olympics with a pair of African records in the individual medley events. Friday, one of those marks was lowered, as the former University of Southern California standout won the 200 I.M. at the 15th edition of the Mediterranean Games, held in Almeria, Spain.

Mellouli negotiated the race in 2:01.00, slightly quicker than the 2:01.11 performance that handed the Tunisian star ninth place in Athens. Mellouli has been on a tear since Athens, as he won the 400 I.M. at the World Short Course Championships last November, to go with a bronze medal in the 200 I.M. At the NCAA Championships in March, Mellouli took first place in the 400 I.M.

France’s Laure Manaudou, a triple-event medalist in Athens, won a pair of gold medals at the Mediterranean Games, as she zipped 29.17 in the 50 backstroke and 4:08.90 in the 400 freestyle. She was supported in the victory column by countrymen Hugues Duboscq and Anne Le Paranthoen. Duboscq, the Olympic bronze medalist in the 100 breast, won that event in 1:01.24 and Le Paranthoen took the women’s 100 breast in 1:10.79.

Other winners from the first night of swimming action were Greece’s Aristeidis Grigoriadis in the men’s 50 back (25.62) and Slovenia’s Anja Klinar in the 200 I.M. (2:16.04). Italy’s Massi Rosolino was the victor of the men’s 400 freestyle in 3:48.79.
