Hansen Joins UCLA Coaching Staff

LOS ANGELES, June 4. THE UCLA women’s swimming program just added an Olympic punch, as Erika Hansen has joined Cyndi Gallagher’s staff as an assistant coach. Hansen replaces Greg Meehan, who left UCLA for the head-coaching position at the University of the Pacific.

A graduate of the University of Texas, Hansen represented the United States in Olympic action in 1988 and 1992. While she competed in the 400 individual medley at the Seoul Games, Hansen contested three events at the Barcelona Games. Finishing fourth in the 400 freestyle at the 1992 Olympics, Hansen was also seventh in the 800 free and 10th in the 400 I.M.

A five-time national champion, Hansen is no stranger to the collegiate coaching ranks. She spent last year as an assistant at the University of Maryland and spent six years as an assistant at the University of Southern California.

Hansen competed for the University of Georgia as a freshman, winning the 1650 freestyle. She then transferred to Texas and won NCAA crowns in the 500 and 1650 freestyles. She was the Southwestern Conference MVP in 1991 and helped the Longhorns win a pair of NCAA team titles.
