James Madison Names Smith as Women’s Coach

HARRISONBURG, Va., June 1. AFTER a season as co-coach of the men’s and women’s swimming programs at James Madison University, Samantha Smith has been named head coach of the women. Smith is a graduate of James Madison and helped coach the team to a fifth-place finish at last year’s Colonial Athletic Association Championships.

Smith was working with Matt Barany, but Barany recently resigned as director of the JMU swimming programs to become head women’s coach at the University of Richmond. While Smith will take control of the James Madison women, a search continues for a coach of the men’s program.

A former assistant at William & Mary, Smith won the 100 and 200 breaststroke events at the 2001 CAA Championships, registering school-record marks in both events. Smith also has worked with the Hershey Aquatic Club in Pennsylvania, her home state.
