Canadian World Championship Trials Come to a Close

MONTREAL, May 15. THE final night of the Canadian World Championship Trials failed to produce any additional qualifiers for swimming’s main event of the Summer of 2005, scheduled to be held in Montreal in July.

Saturday evening did produce one down-to-the-wire finish, on the touch in the women’s 50-meter butterfly. Kelly Stefanyshyn managed a time of 27.63 to narrowly hold off Mackenzie Downing, who placed second with an effort of 27.64. Earlier in the meet, Stefanyshyn claimed victory in the 200 backstroke.

In the 400 individual medley events, Liz Warden and Carlos Sayao earned victories. Warden won on the female side with a mark of 4:48.75, the only swim under 4:50. She was followed to the wall by Alexa Komarnycky (4:51.16). As for Sayao, he won the men’s 400 I.M. in 4:21.09, ahead of the 4:22.40 managed by Keith Beavers.

Other triumphs were posted by Riley Janes in the men’s 50 back (26.14), Jenna Gresdal in the women’s 50 free (25.82), Lisa Blackburn in the 50 breaststroke (32.92) and Ryan Cochrane in the 1,500 free (15:44.21).
