INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., April 3. WHOSE turn was it? Evidently, the answer was Michael Phelps'.

Renewing what might be the sport's best single-event rivalry, Phelps and Ian Crocker put on a show in the 100 butterfly at the World Championship Trials. The outcome witnessed Phelps, a la the Olympic Games, catching Crocker at the wall.

Adding to his victories in the 200 and 400 freestyle events, Phelps stopped the clock in 51.34, slightly quicker than the 51.45 managed by Crocker. Both men finished nearly two seconds of Peter Verhoef, the third-place performer in 53.14.

As usual, it was Crocker who set the early pace, as the University of Texas product and world-record holder (50.76) turned in 24.16, ahead of the 24.68 of Phelps. But Phelps poured it on heading into the wall, like he did in Athens, and came away with the triumph.

“I’m pretty happy with that,” Phelps said. “To be three-tenths of a second off my best time with this kind of training under my belt, we’re pretty pumped.”

Phelps and Crocker have taken turns winning major 100 fly races. While Phelps won this meet and at the Olympics, it was Crocker who prevailed at last summer's Olympic Trials and at the 2003 World Champs. Look for another showdown in Montreal.

In placing third, Verhoef finished ahead of Davis Tarwater (53.45) and Jayme Cramer (53.72). The sixth through eighth positions went to Nate Dusing (53.95), Ben Michaelson (54.08) and Dan Rohleder (54.46).
