US World Champs Trials, Day 1: One Event, One Upset — Komisarz Takes the 100 Fly

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, April 1. ONE Thing seemed crystal clear after this morning’s prelim in the women’s 100-meter fly: the real battle would be for the #2 spot.

Natalie Coughlin swam a relaxed 58.97, the only sub-59 effort of the morning and seemed to have the event well in hand. Her Olympic teammate, late-bloomer Rachel Komisarz, and Georgia’s Mary Descenza, who missed making the US Olympic team in this event last year and wanted to make amends, would be fighting for that all-precious #2 spot.

But it didn’t quite work out that way.

It all appeared to be going according to form, with Natalie turning first in 27.33, well ahead of Komisarz, at 27.69 and Descenza 13-hundredths farther back. Then Natalie began to feel the effects of her swift first lap and her two challengers began creeping up on her.

At the 75-meter mark, Komisarz caught and then passed the leader and, a few strokes later so did Descenza. At the wall, it was Komisarz the upset winner in 58.56, followed by Descenza at 58.76. Coughlin struggled home in 59.15.
