Women’s NCAA Div. 1 Champs, Day 3 Finals: Rigamonti Cruises to 1,650 Free Title

By Dan Mihalik

WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana, March 19. FLAVIA Rigamonti took last year off to concentrate on the 2004 Athens Olympics. All that training showed in the 1,650 freestyle final on the third and final day of the NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships. She dominated the rest of the field by winning the event in a time of 15:46.84, good for a new pool record.

Rigamonti, who won this race for the third time, trailed for only 250 yards. Laura Conway of Georgia held the lead for a short time, but Rigamonti reclaimed the lead and never looked back. Hayley Peirsol of Auburn was in third for most of the race and was nearly a half pool length behind Conway in the middle of the race. But Peirsol covered the ground and more, as she took second. Conway finished in third.

In fourth was Carly Piper of Wisconsin, followed closely by Auburn’s Adrienne Binder. Lauren Costella (Stanford), Julia Stowers (Tennessee) and Meredith Green (Florida) finished the top eight.
