University of British Columbia Sweeps CIS Titles

EDMONTON, Alberta, March 10. THERE were no north-of-the-border surprises late last month, when the Candian Interuniversity of Sport conducted its swimming championships at the University of Alberta.

For the eighth consecutive year, the University of British Columbia rolled to victory in the men's and women's competitions, finishing ahead of the University of Calgary.

Scott Dickens was the dominant man at the meet, winning seven medals and setting a pair of individual records. Dickens posted a breaststroke trifecta, taking the 50, 100 and 200 disciplines. He set records in the 50 (27.85) and 100 (59.91) distances.

Dickens also picked up a bronze medal in the 100 freestyle and powered the Thunderbirds to relay gold in the 400 free relay and 400 medley relay. The Swimmer of the Year helped British Columbia to silver in the 800 free relay.

For the women, Jennifer Carroll of UQTR (Quebec) was the outstanding performer and named Swimmer of the Year. Carroll set a meet record in the 50 backstroke (27.57) and tied a standard in the 100 back (59.74). She added gold in the 50 butterfly and took silver in the 200 back.
