Longhorns Sweep Men’s and Women’s Relays on Opening Night of Big-12 Meet -- February 24, 2005

COLLEGE STATION, TX., February 24. TEXAS women and men swimmers and divers, defending Big 12 champs, won all four relays on opening night of the conference-championship meet here this evening at the A&M Aquatic Center.

The Longhorns won the women's 200 medley in an NCAA auto-qualifying cut of 1:38.73 to A&M's 1:39.81 with the Aggies' runner-up clocking an A&M record.

Interestingly, Texas' outstanding first year backstroker, Hayley McGregory, among the national leaders in the 100, did not swim on either “A” relay, though she did get a chance to register a 1:49.23 on the third leg of the Texas “B” relay in the longer event.

In the men’s medley, Texas just made the NCAA automatic cut of 1:26.72 with its 1:26.64, some four seconds faster than runner-up Missouri.
The 800 free relay saw a tight battle between Texas and A&M for the gold with the Longhorns prevailing, 7:13.36-7:14.22, both times making the NCAA "B" cut.

Kansas senior Amy Gruber, among the favorites in the sprints, had the fastest leadoff split with a pr 1:47.01, also a Kansas record. She's been 22.96/49.70 for the 50-100 frees and 54.30 for the 100 fly.

The men's 800 race saw Longhorn Matt McGinnis swim a career-best 1:34.93 leading off as Texas won by nearly 10 seconds in 6:23.37, making the NCAA "A" cut by a wide margin. Texas' Big 12-record is 6:22.89.
