Seniors Go Out In Style In Sweep Of Washington In Final Home Meet -- February 7, 2005
HONOLULU, HI, February 7. THE University of Hawaii men and women's swimming and diving squads defeated the University of Washington Saturday afternoon at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex in the final dual meet of the season for the two programs, per reports from the home team.
The men defeated UW, 160-128, while the women knocked off the Huskies, 157-137, as eight seniors -- Stephanie Regucera, Maggie Roberts, Yan Chen, Dena Quick, Nimrod Palma, Nick Cabebe, Spencer Haskins, and Hugo Duran -- were honored prior to the meet.
The Rainbow Warriors got a huge effort today from junior distance swimmer Andrew Affleck. The native of Australia won the 1000 Free (9:10.62), 200 Fly (1:49.12), and 400 IM (3:58.97).
Also, junior Thomas Winkler posted strong showings, winning both the 100 back (49.19) and 200 back (1:46.59), while sophomore Chad Thomsen won the 100 Breast (56.76) and 200 Breast (2:02.75).
In diving, the men were uncontested as Mats Wiktorsson posted the highest scores in the 1-meter (314.55) and 3-meter (350.63). Teammate Justin Wilcox was not far off the pace in the 1M (266.78) and 3M (290.70) events.
The Rainbow Wahine picked up 32 uncontested points in diving as QiongJie Huang won both events with scores of 320.93 and 327.38 in the 1-meter and 3-meter, respectively.
Senior sprinter Dena Quick won both the 50 Free (23.34) and 100 Free (51.05), while teammate Nicole Mackey captured first place in the 100 back (55.55) and 200 back (2:02.11).
season-best times were turned in by senior Yan Chen in the 200 Fly (2:02.96) and 400 IM (4:22.87), and junior Jessica Affleck in the 500 Free (4:58.40) and 1000 Free (10:03.65).
UH has the next two weeks off to prepare for the Women's Western Athletic Conference Championships in San Antonio, Texas, while the men compete in Rochester, Mich., in the National Independent Conference Championships. Both meets run Feb. 23-26.
Washington still has Pac-10 Championships on the docket before the NCAAs.
