Bermuda “Round the Sound” Event Fun For All

By Duncan Scott

HARRINGTON SOUND, BERMUDA, December 20. JIM McNichols tells SwimInfo the Bermuda Open Water Swimmers (BOWS) have hosted another successful ocean swimming event this fall, as they have each year since their founding in 1989 by a hodgepodge of local athletes and Navy personnel then stationed in Bermuda.

There are races at four different distances (2k, 4k, 7k, 10k) and multiple age groups(under 13, 13-39, 40-49, over 50). There’s lots of opportunity for success to go around.

The main race is the 10K, a full lap around Harrington Sound in a beautiful setting, with the other shorter distances (7.5K, 4K, 2K) swum simultaneously with a staggered start that brings most of the finishers in at roughly the same time, to aid spectators. The event is normally in mid-October when the average ocean temperature is a balmy 72-74 degrees, and is the concluding event of the fall age group championships that often include overseas age group competitors.

While Rowdy Gaines and a few other past Olympians have participated in various years, it is largely a local amateur event. The Masters division gets strong local participation with the periodic appearance of a world class open water veteran. Being a true sprinter, the year Rowdy Gaines visited, he opted for the 2K!
