Mortimer and 400 Free Relay Establish Meet Records to Close Out Minnesota Invite Win for Hosts -- November 30, 2004

MINNEAPOLIS, MN, November 30. SENIOR captain Justin Mortimer finished the 1,650-yard freestyle event at the Minnesota Invitational with a new meet record per reports from Gopher sources.

Mortimer shattered the old record of 15:19.1 and added a new record of 15:15.37 and a NCAA provisional qualifying time.

The Golden Gophers dominated the Men's side of the three-day event, taking first place with a score of 1443.5. Minnesota's closest competitor was Purdue with 1001 points.

Travis Beckerle finished second clocking a time of 15:34.10 in the 1650 free, while David Moulder added a fourth-place showing with a time of 15:49.30.

The Minnesota 400 free relay chipped in a meet record time of 2:58.10, shattering the old record of 2:59.59, also held by Minnesota. The foursome of Mario Delac, Terry Silkaitis, Neil Osten and Igor Cerensek also shattered a provisional qualifying time of 2:59.43.

Scott Young led the Gophers in the 200 Back event, finishing sixth with a time of 1:52.35. Dan Berve added a ninth-place showing with a time of
1:53.99.

The Gophers dominated the 100 free event, placing seven of eight in the A Final. Delac placed first with a time of 44.68, followed by Cerensek with a time of 45.20 and Christian Anguis in third with a time of 45.57. Osten captured the fourth spot (45.63), while Jason Timmer was fifth (45.76), Sean McCaffrey was sixth (46.34), while Kiel Ochalek added an the eighth-place finish (46.81).

Adam Mitchell added a second-place showing in the 200 fly, while Mortimer swam to a third-place spot. Lucas Peterson finished fifth overall. Terry Silkaitis finished eighth.

Minnesota next competes at the Georgia Invite, Dec. 3-5.
