Stanford Men Continue to Dominate After Day Two of Speedo Cup -- November 20, 2004
LONG BEACH, Calif., Nov. 19. THE Stanford men's swimming team continues to dominate at the 2004 UCI/Speedo Cup in Long Beach, Calif. They lead the competition with 1,145 points. San Diego is second with 701 while BYU sits in third with 693.
The Cardinal opened the second day of action with a convincing win in the 200 medley relay, turning in a time of 1:29.53 to defeat BYU (1:31.20).
Stanford followed with a 1-2 finish in the 400 IM as Tobias Oriwol took top honors, clocking in at 3:57.75. Teammate Mark Stephens placed second in a time of 3:58.58.
In the finals of the 100 butterfly, Matt McDonald took second, touching the wall in 48.90 while teammate Ben Wildman-Tobriner placed sixth with a time of 50.54 to help the Cardinal cause.
Stanford grabbed the top four spots in the 200 freestyle final. Andy Grant turned in a time of 1:37.75 to lead the field and was followed by Michael McLean (1:39.46), Danny Beal (1:39.98) and Kyle Ransom (1:40.12).
The next event on the schedule was the 100 breaststroke, where the Cardinal claimed the top two spots. Ricky Eddy's time of 55.75 put him in first, while teammate Gary Marshall's time of 56.00 placed him second. Another 1-2 finish was in store for Stanford in the 100 backstroke finals. Hongzhe Sun (47.72) edged teammate Jayme Cramer (47.88) for top honors.
