Purdue Women. North Carolina Men Lead After Second Day of NIKE Cup

CHAPEL HILL, NC, Nov. 19. FRESHMAN Kelly Woodruff and Lindsey Marck won individual events for Coach Frank Comfort's North Carolina women's swimming and diving team here this eveninig, but Purdue's Lady Boilermakers stil maintain the edge on the distaff side after two days of the Nike Cup Invitational at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium here.

However, the Tar Heel men's swimmers and divers used their outstanding depth to increase their lead to over 220 points on their side of the ledger. The Tar Heel men, a perennial Atlantic Coast Conference power, lead with 743.5 points, 220.5 points ahead of second-place Clemson. Virginia Tech is third with 387.5 points, slightly ahead of the Tennessee Volunteers who have 367.5 points. Syracuse is fifth with 307.5 points and East Carolina is sixth with 209 points.

Purdue's women extended their lead after tonight's splashing and now have 682.5 points while the Tar Heels are second with 522.5. Kansas is third with 393 followed by Virginia Tech with 384.5, Clemson with 282, East Carolina with 145 and Syracuse with 142.

On the men's side, both Tennessee sophomore Casey Dauw (400 IM) and Clemson senior Tommy Rappold (100 back-butterfly) picked up their second individual titles of the meet. Dauw, who won the 200 IM opening night in a pr and nation-leading 1:47.07, won the longer medley with his second-career best of the competion, a Vol- and Nike Cup-record, and nation-leading 3:47.17. His old career-best was the 3:47.34 he won in last year here. Dauw's winning swim was also an NCAA automatic cut, giving him a pair in two races.

And to keep busy, the Volunteer star led off his team's victorious 800 free relay in 1:37+, another career-best for the rapidly improving sophomore.

Not to be outdone, Rappold set a Clemson record in the 100 fly (47.76, No. 1 nationally) and improved more than a half-second with his pr 48.88 100 back victory. The Tigers, under second-year coach Chris Ip, who was inordinately successful as coach at Indian River Community College in Florida before taking over at Clemson two seasons ago, are starting to make waves and soon may be challenging UNC and Virginia for ACC honors.

Virginia Tech's breaststroke specialist Kevin Furlong, who showed his heels to the field at last season's Big East Championships, showed he'll be a factor this year in the ACC title meet with his nation-leading 54.58 100 win. His VT and Big East record is 53.54 from last season's meet. Furlong also swam the breaststroke leg on the Hokies' winning 200 medley relay.

(VT, along with Miami [FL] and Boston College are all in the ACC this year for the first time. Miami and BC, however, do not support men's teams.)

Both UNC 200-yard medley relays won their respective heats Friday night, while finishing second overall. Kansas captured the women's event and Virginia Tech took the men's 200 medley relay. Woodruff and Amanda Smith went 1-2 in the 400 individual medley for the Tar Heels with Woodruff winning in a career best 4:20.36. Senior Lizzy Bruce dropped over eight seconds from her preliminary time to win the consolation final.

Carolina rookie Marck won the women's 100 butterfly and moved into third on the UNC all-time list with her pr 54.41, among the fastest times nationally.

North Carolina junior Jon Albrecht finished second in the men's 100 backstroke with a time of 49.44, good for fourth place on the all-time UNC depth chart in the event.
