Vanderkaay, Tarwater Power Michigan Past Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Mich., Nov. 19. THE No. 9-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team claimed a 132-111 victory tonight over in-state rival Michigan State at Charles McCaffree Pool.

BigBlue is guided by rookie head man Bob Bowman, who coached American Michael Phelps to six gold medals at Athens this past summer. (Phelps turned professional several years ago and thus has no collegiate eligibility.)

The Wolverines swept the top three spots in the 500 yard freestyle, the 1650 freestyle and the 400 individual medley en route to the win.
Wolverine junior Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) and teammate Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./The Webb School) each won a pair of events to lead the Wolverines (3-0, 2-0 Big Ten).

Michigan took control in the second event with a sweep of the 1650 as Vanderkaay won in 15:55.51, followed by Zayd Ma (Ann Arbor, Mich./Clonlara HS) in second and Jorge Carral (Mexico City, Mexico/The Bolles School, Fla.) in third. Vanderkaay also won the 100-yard freestyle for the second
straight meet, posting a time of 46.25.

In the 200 yard freestyle, Brendan Neligan (Briarwood, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy HS) claimed the top spot with a time of 1:43.14. Freshman Johnny Austermann (Huntington Woods, Mich./Berkley HS) finished second.

Tarwater claimed the first of his two victories on the night with the top time in the 50-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 21.21. He also won the 100-yard butterfly in 49.37 for his third individual victory of the season.

The Wolverines posted their second sweep of the night with the top three spots in the 400-yard IM. Chuck Sayao (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthra Park HS) won the event in 3:59.03. Alex Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) finished second followed by Nicholas Douville (Dayton, Ohio/Archbishop Alter HS) in third.

Dane Grenda (Hockessin, Del./Salesianum HS) earned his first individual collegiate event win with his victory in the 100-yard backstroke, touching the wall in 51.88.

Michigan closed out the meet with a sweep of the 500 freestyle. Alex Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) posted the top time, finishing in 4:35.67. The victory marked his second straight in the event. Neligan finished second in the 500 and Austermann rounded out the top three.
