Arizona State Women Beat Purdue and Notre Dame, but Men Fall to Boilermakers

WEST LAFAYETTE, IN, October 30. ARIZONA State University swimming and diving teams took on Purdue and Notre Dame Friday evening in a triangular held at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center which saw the women's team top Purdue, 166-133, and Notre Dame, 188-111, while the men's team fell to Purdue, 153.5- 146.5.

ASU reported senior All-American Florencia Szigeti led the way for the Sun Devil ladies swimming to two individual first-place finishes as well as earning the top spot as a member of the 400 medley relay team. Szigeti, the reigning Pac-10 Champion in the 200 freestyle, was true to form Friday as she touched the wall first with a time of 1:49.13. She followed up in the 50 freestyle with a second-place finish (23.50) and then rounded out her evening in the 100 freestyle where she led the pack with a time of 50.75. Her 50, 100 and 200 times are good for NCAA consideration times.

Freshman Caitlin Andrew, junior Heidi Schmidt, junior Laura Ullrich and Szigeti started off the women with an opening win in the 400 medley relay (3:49.31). Following up with victories for the ladies was freshman Sarah A Fischer as she overcame the pack in the 500 and 1000 freestyle with times of 4:54.77 and 10:05.52 respectively. Andrew took home top honors in the 100 butterfly (55.90) while Schmidt touched the wall first in the 100 (1:04.13) and 200 (2:20.42) breaststroke events.

In the diving pool, senior Trisha Tumlinson grabbed the third place slot in both the 1-meter (289.75) and 3-meter (294.25) events, while Notre Dame's Meghan Perry-Eaton and Purdue's Carrie McCambridge battled for the first and second positions.

The men were led by juniors Joona Puhakka and David Kolozar and freshmen Lucas Azevedo and CJ Nuess. The Sun Devil men took charge of the distance freestyle events, claiming the top two positions in each event. They finished the 500 with Azevedo touching the wall first with a time of 4:33.78 followed by Kolozar (4:41.59). Azevedo again claimed top honors in the 1000 swimming a time of 9:20.75, which topped teammate Nuess (9:29.27), who took second.

Junior diver Joona Puhakka continued to dominate the diving field Friday evening taking home top honors in the 1-meter event with a score of 368.35 and the 3-meter event where he scored 351.50.

The men went one-two in both the 200 butterfly and 400 IM. The 200 butterfly saw Kolozar touch the wall first (1:48.68) with Nuess finishing second (1:50.93). The 400 IM saw the reverse results with Nuess notched the victory with a time of 3:56.02 and Kolozar coming in next at 3:59.48.

Sophomore Richie Crowder also grabbed a top finish for the Sun Devils as he touched the wall first in the 50 freestyle (21.10).

The Boilermakers dominated the remaining events on the men’s side including a triple by Louis Paul in the 200 free (1:40.61), 100 free (:45.66) and 100 fly (:50.95). Giordon Poglioli doubled in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes, in :56.57 and 2:01.08, respectively.

The Sun Devils hit the water again Saturday as the men stayed in West Lafayette for another match up with Purdue while the ladies went south to Bloomington, Ind. to take on the Hoosiers.
