Short Course World Champs, Day Two Finals: Jenny Thompson on Track to Go Out With Gold, Leads 50 Butterfly Semifinals

INDIANAPOLIS, IN, October 8. JENNY Thompson is the all-time most medaled athlete in both Olympic and FINA World Championship competition.

And though she has said this meet will close out her storied career, she may not be done collecting colorful trinkets. Thompson led qualifying and now leads through semifinal swims of the 50 butterfly.

Thompson won semifinal #2 at :26.34 over 100 freestyle leader Lisbeth Lenton (AUS), :26.69. World record holder and defending champion Anna-Karin Kammerling (SWE) won semifinal #1 at :26.68, just ahead of American Rachel Komisarz at :26.74.

It took :27.03 to make the final, a time equaled by 34 year old Judith Draxler of Austria.

Thompson will have to withstand expected drops in the final from Kammerling and Lenton to complete a fairy tale retirement with a gold medal.
