Aussies Double-up on Women’s Platform Podium; Newbery Steady to Gold

By M. Duncan Scott

ATHENS, Greece, August 22. CHANTELLE Newbery of Australia demonstrated the virtues of consistency in international diving in winning the Women’s 10 Meter Platform Olympic gold medal, the first Australian diving gold since Paris 1924, according to reports from Fox Sports – Australia.
Newbery's victory was Australia's first since Dick Eve won gold in the plain high dive in Paris at the 1924 Games and was the first diving gold medal ever by an Australian woman. Newbery’s teammate, Loudy Tourky, leader after the semi-finals, took bronze.
Newbery had no dives below 70 points in the final and two over 80. Her total on each of the first four dives in the final round was the third high total for that round. Her final dive garnered the second high total. The reward was a score of 590.31 points, 14.01 ahead of Lao Lishi (576.30) of China, with Tourky at 561.66.
Defending champion Laura Wilkinson of the US had the fourth highest total entering the finals but was never able to find the same magic as in Sydney, finishing in fifth at 549.72, behind reigning World Champion Emilie Heymans of Canada, 555.03. Heymans trailed Newbery by only about 5 points entering the last round but lost 30 points to the leader on that one dive.
Sara Hildebrand finished tenth, joining Wilkinson to give the US two finalists, just as Australia, China and Canada.
Australia had already put a claim in as a heavyweight in the current diving world with three diving bronze medals in Athens, all in the relatively new discipline of synchronized diving, Olympic events only since the Sydney Games. Even more significant is the fact that the Newbery family had an hand in each Australian medal until Tourky.
Newbery's victory was Australia's first women's Olympic diving title and comes after her bronze medal in the three meter synchronized springboard with Irina Lashko. Newbery’s husband Robert Newbery has won bronze medals in Athens in the men's synchronized 10m platform with Matthew Helm and in the men's synchronized three meter springboard with Steven Barnett.
The new champion is the mother of a young son, who she was missing terribly. She had to do something pretty special to balance that ache. "I think at the moment I just want to get home and see my son because I really missed him today. This morning I woke up and thought this had better be worth it because I have really missed him today."
Jet Newbery, two years old, is staying with his grandparents in Brisbane while his mum and dad compete at the Athens Olympics.
