Women’s 50 Freestyle, Prelims Day 7: Inky Sizzles in World Best 24.66, Joyce Next in PR 25.06, Jenny Thompson Makes It Too

ATHENS, August 20. DUTCH world record-holder Inge De Bruijn is keen to go out a winner if her prelim time is any indication.

Her 24.66 in the final heat of the morning prelims is the world's fastest time thus far this year. Inky will be tough to beat. (Her teammate Marleen Veldhuis looked sharp too in 25.28).

American teen Kara Lynn Joyce won the second to last heat in a Personal Record (PR) 25.06 and can only get better. Meanwhile, her 31-year-old teammate Jenny Thompson will be hoping to go out with an individual medal, qualifying in 11th place 25.50.

Both the Aussie stars were through. Michelle Engelsman (25.28) made it in fifth place and the former 100 free world record-holder Libby Lenton (25.31) will have something to prove, having missed a shot at a medal in the two-lap race.

Others through include French hope Malia Metella (25.21), British five-time Olympian Alison Sheppard (25.36), Swede Therese Alshammar (25.42), Brazilians Flavia Cazziolato (25.40) and Rebeca Gusmao (25.64), Panamian Eileen Coparropa (25.57) and Sviatlana Khakhlova from Belarus (25.24).

Notable big name non-qualifiers include: Martina Moravcova, Sandra Volker, and Hanna-Maria Seppala.
