A Fun Interview with Gary Hall, Jr., and His Coach, Mike Bottom -- August 13, 2004

By Phil Whitten

PHOENIX, Ariz., August 13. INTERVIEWING Gary Hall, Jr. is always a lot of fun. You never know what he’s going to say. What you do know is that whatever he says, it is sure to be clever, provocative or funny – and sometimes all three at once.

Here’s a brief interview we conducted with Gary shortly after he won the 50 meters free in 22.26 seconds at the Janet Evans Invitational in June. He also swam a 51-low for the 100, placing 26th overall. All in all, an encouraging performance for the defending co-Olympic champion in the 50.
